Sohar, Oman

The New City in Sohar master plan is an ambitious initiative designed to transition Sohar, Oman, into a significant international gateway, supporting extensive future economic and population growth. This initiative reimagines over 700 hectares of previously underutilised agricultural land into a thriving urban centre with over 20,000 new homes, integrating nature corridors that enhance the city’s walkability and connectivity.

The master plan is centred around fostering a car-free environment, significantly influenced by the ‘five-minute city’ principle. This design philosophy aims to create a network of connected communities where amenities and essential services are within a five-minute walk from homes and workplaces. This approach not only enhances the quality of urban living but also promotes micro-mobility across residential areas.

Key Mobility Features:

  1. Integrated Nature Corridors:

These corridors function as green 'super-highways' throughout the city, prioritising pedestrians and cyclists over vehicles. Thus, they enhance sustainable mobility and connect various parts of the city seamlessly.

  2. Public Transport Integration:

The plan includes a new commuter railway link and a passenger railway terminus, connecting Sohar to Muscat. This integration aims to boost interconnectivity and reduce reliance on personal vehicles, aligning with broader goals of economic growth spurred by the free port.

  3. Community-centric Urban Design:

The layout encourages walking and cycling by featuring unprogrammed spaces for spontaneous community interactions and neighbourhood centres that offer community services, retail, and dining options, all accessible without the need for vehicular transport.

  4. Environmental Integration:

The master plan incorporates green infrastructure that serves dual purposes—enhancing local biodiversity and creating a microclimate conducive to outdoor activities, even in extreme temperatures.
